In case you haven’t noticed yet, there are two of us sharing this blog: Tal and Layla.

Hey – I’m Layla, I’m 23 years old and I currently reside in New York City – Manhattan to be specific. I’m two years out of school and spend my days working in HR for a kickass tech company.

I used to be super athletic growing up – I’ve played volleyball, field hockey, lacrosse, and swam competitively in my youth. All of this activity allowed me to eat pretty much whatever I wanted and still stay thin. Then, I got serious about schoolwork my junior year of high school and stopped working out and playing sports. Naturally, I gained weight, since I hadn’t adjusted my eating habits and was still chowing down like I was running for 3 hours a day. I’ve never been particularly healthy – I’m big on skipping meals and my incredibly picky eating habits make it hard for me to get all the nutrients I need. I have a crazy sweet tooth and I love candy and cookies and all manner of sugary sweets. Then there’s alcohol – the bane of my existence. I’m a drinker – always have been. I love cocktails and partying and staying up late clubbing in the city. All of this takes a toll on my body and it’s so many excess, wasted calories.

I had a blood clot a year ago (Feb 2008) and now I’m on daily doses of blood thinners which do all sorts of things to my body and restrict the amount of Vitamin K I can consume, as well as the types of medication/supplements I’m allowed to take.

So, in other words, I’m pretty messed up. I’m hoping to gain a sense of community and support from this endeavor and the motivation to be healthy. I know what it’s like to be really, really sick and I want to make sure that I do everything in my power to keep my body running smoothly. I’d love to lose weight in the process, but just establishing healthy relationships with food and alcohol would be enough for me.
